Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects over 1 billion people. Left untreated, high blood pressure can increase your risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. Yet nearly 1 in 3 individuals with hypertension struggle to control their blood pressure despite being on medication.
If you’ve been unable to control your blood pressure, or are interested in an alternative to daily medications, you may be a candidate for the RADIANCE-HTN Clinical Study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. This research study is evaluating a minimally-invasive, catheter-based procedure (the Paradise® Renal Denervation System). This investigational procedure may lower your blood pressure and reduce your need for blood pressure medications.
What Causes High Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the force of blood against your artery walls as it circulates through your body. Blood pressure naturally rises and falls throughout the day, but it can cause problems if it stays too high for a long time.
Blood pressure is controlled by a complex interaction of signaling from several systems within the body including the nervous system, circulatory system, and endocrine (hormonal) systems. The nerves running to the kidneys are especially important in the control of blood pressure. People with high blood pressure typically have overactive renal (kidney) nerves. It has been shown that calming these overactive nerves can help reduce blood pressure.
What is the Paradise® Renal Denervation System?
The Paradise Renal Denervation system is designed to lower blood pressure by reducing over-activity of kidney nerves through a minimally-invasive procedure. A single, small incision is made in the groin. A small flexible catheter is inserted, and then placed in the artery supplying the kidney. Ultrasound energy (sound waves) is delivered to the tissue surrounding the artery for a few seconds. The ultrasound energy generates heat to decrease the over-activity of the nerves leading to the kidneys. Both kidneys are treated, and the device is then removed.
What is the RADIANCE-HTN Clinical Study?
Right now, doctors at select centers in the US, UK, Netherlands, France, and Germany are conducting a new research study to evaluate the ability of the Paradise Renal Denervation System to lower blood pressure (the RADIANCE-HTN Clinical Study). If you’ve been unable to control your blood pressure, or are interested in an alternative to daily medications, this study may be right for you.
The Paradise Renal Denervation System may help reduce blood pressure without the need for medications. However, participants in the RADIANCE-HTN Study may also benefit from having their blood pressure condition closely monitored throughout the course of the study. In addition, study participants may receive evaluation of their renal (kidney) anatomy, which may help uncover previously undiagnosed abnormalities or narrowing of the renal artery. Lastly, the results of this study may help other people with high blood pressure in the future.
